Activity Overview

Format: All three IELTS Speaking parts (per IELTS Australia standards)
Mode: Peer-to-peer practice (students rotate as examiner and candidate)
Focus: Advanced collocations (from the C1-level quiz)
LEO Quality: Practical, challenging, and designed for real-world communication
Part 1

Introduction & Interview (4–5 minutes)

How It Works:

  • One student acts as the examiner, asking 4–6 questions from the list below
  • The candidate answers, using at least one advanced collocation per response
  • Focus on natural conversation flow and authentic responses

Sample Questions:

  • Tell me about a typical workday. Do you ever work from dawn till dusk?
  • How do you manage strict deadlines at work or school?
  • Have you ever been house hunting? What was it like?
  • How do you unwind after a demanding day?
  • Have you made any lifestyle changes recently?
  • How do you ensure you get plenty of sleep?

Target Collocations:

Part 2

Long Turn (3–4 minutes)

How It Works:

  • Each student receives a topic card and has 1 minute to prepare
  • Speak for 1–2 minutes, using at least three advanced collocations
  • The examiner asks one follow-up question
  • Focus on coherent structure and detailed examples

Topic Card 1

Describe a time you had to meet a strict deadline.

Topic Card 2

Describe a major lifestyle change you made.

Topic Card 3

Describe a memorable journey (e.g., a bumpy flight or overbooked plane).

Target Collocations:

Part 3

Discussion (4–5 minutes)

How It Works:

  • The examiner asks follow-up questions related to Part 2
  • Candidates must use at least two collocations per answer
  • Peers can join the discussion to extend ideas
  • Focus on abstract thinking and sophisticated language

Sample Discussion Questions:

  • Are strict deadlines beneficial or harmful in the workplace?
  • What prompts people to make lifestyle changes in your country?
  • How do travel experiences shape a person's character?
  • What are the challenges of maintaining a balanced diet?
  • How can people get ahead in their careers?
